Release
by Lina Zeng
Lost in wintry woods, I shiver at cold’s invasion
making it harder to breathe when I think of you.
My mind begs me to stop searching for crumbs
I hope you have dropped, but I keep searching
for them until tears threaten to fall once more:
I take a real breath, decide not to let you trap me
in this forest of self-doubt. I pledge to escape
from under this icy canopy, now shrouding stars.
I will forge my own path separate from you,
release the rope that has bound us for so long.
